چکیده

We consider statistical ensembles of Schwarzschild black holes and prove that these ensembles describe black holes of non vanishing temperatures. The mean space-times associated to these ensembles are explored through exact computations of their energy distributions, total masses and calorific capacities. We discuss our results, with special emphasis on their connections with current and near future observations of astrophysical black holes, string theory and cosmology.

Thermal statistical ensembles of classical extreme black holes

New statistical ensembles of classical extreme black holes are introduced. Each ensemble is proven to represent a non extreme, finite temperature black hole. This mean or average black hole is surrounded by a mean electromagnetic field and a so-called apparent matter, which is the large scale trace of the averaged upon small scale fluctuations of the gravitational and electromagnetic fields. Ho...

Remarks on Thermal Strings outside Black Holes

We discuss the semiclassical approximation to the level density of (super) strings propagating in non-compact coset manifolds G/H. We show that the WKB ansatz agrees with heuristic red-shift arguments with respect to the “exact” sigma-model metric, up to some deviations from minimal coupling, parametrized by the dilaton. This approximation is used to study thermal ensembles of free strings in b...

Thermal Fields, Entropy, and Black Holes

In this review we describe statistical mechanics of quantum systems in the presence of a Killing horizon and compare statistical-mechanical and one-loop contributions to black hole entropy. Studying these questions was motivated by attempts to explain the entropy of black holes as a statistical-mechanical entropy of quantum fields propagating near the black hole horizon. We provide an introduct...

An Observational Diagnostic for Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

We consider observational tests for the nature of Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). These must distinguish between thermal–timescale mass transfer on to stellar–mass black holes leading to anisotropic X-ray emission, and accretion on to intermediate–mass black holes. We suggest that long–term transient behavior via the thermal–viscous disk instability could discriminate between these two poss...

Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Numerical Simulation of Accretion Flows Around Black Holes

We present results of several numerical simulations of two dimensional axisymmetric accretion flows around black holes using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). We consider both stellar black holes and as well as supermassive black holes. We assume bremsstrahlung to be the only source of cooling as it is simpler to implement in numerical simulations. We observe that due to both radial an...
